Gutter Cleaning

window cleaning, gutter cleaning and maintenance, siding cleaning
The gutter and downspout system of your home carries the rainwater from your roof and diverts it away from your home.

Many homeowners don't know the extent to which gutters provide basic protection for their home. Siding, roofing, and foundations, gutters protect them all.

When downspouts become clogged, rainwater can back up into your sub-roofing. Cracks and gaps in your gutters can cause water to run down your siding, significantly reducing its life expectancy.

When the water hits the ground, pooling can occur, drowning flowers and shrubs. Worse yet, water can seep into your foundation causing shifting and cracks, a nightmare scenario for homeowners.

Gutter Cleaning can prevent damage to your home.

Why hire a professional instead of doing the work yourself?

Even for capable homeowners, there are compelling reasons to hire a professional gutter cleaning company:
  1. Safety: Climbing ladders and then reaching can be dangerous. You owe it to your family to stay safe. Many homes have second levels that can't be reached by ladder. Climbing on the roof may be necessary. Cedar and tile roofs can be extremely slippery when damp. Each year in British Columbia, falls result in some 200,000 days in the hospital. Learn more. There are plenty of other safe and enjoyable home projects to do.
  2. Equipment: Our ladders have adjustable feet to accommodate uneven ground. We use ladder stand offs to prevent the ladder from shifting and damaging siding. We have poles, scoops, harnesses and other equipment to make the job safer and easier.
  3. Peace of Mind: Along with cleaning the gutters, we will also do a full inspection and look out for potential problems.
  4. Convenience: A project that may take only a few hours for the professionals can take a homeowner the better part of a day to complete. It may be well worth the money to give yourself another day of leisure

Gutter and Roof Cleaning Advice for Home Owners:

LADDERS

The most dangerous time on ladders is getting off the ladder and on to on the ladder from the roof. When climbing onto or exiting the roof, you don't want the ladder to shift that could cause you to lose your balance. The ladder needs to be secure at the top and the bottom.
  • Top of the ladder: Ladder arms... If you don't have them, tie off the ladder to one or both of the gutter brackets. Always be sure to extend the ladder three feet above roof line. This is the perfect height. Another foot higher and it's a tough to get your chest around. One foot lower and now your reaching down in an awkward motion.

  • Bottom of the ladder: On bottom of the ladder we use leg leavelers. We are able adjust the level on both sides of the ladder. The bottom feet of the ladder are adjustable to different grades of surfaces.
  • Angle of ladder: Most ladder accidents happen by ladders slipping out. What does that mean? The correct angle of the ladder should be one foot away from the building for every four feet you go up. A ladder positioned at a poor angle can slip out backwards. This is most likely to happen on wet or even moist surfaces. Sun decks and patios can be very dangerous. Even a small amount of algae, coupled with some overnight due can cause the ladder to slip out.
This is what we use to stay safe...

The carpet underlay grips the ground so well, your ladder is secure. I must acknowledge that I learned this and many more things from Kevin at K&L Windows and Gutters in Vancouver. Thank you!

There are times when you are on a angled grassy like slope. Perfect conditions for a ladder to slip out. We use the same stop as above with an addition, spikes.

Drill three our four holes in the back of the board. Drive some 12" nails through the board into the ground and your ladder should be secure.

Ladder accidents are usually caused by the ladder slipping out or falling one way or another. We have covered slipping out. As bad as slipping out is, falling laterally is even worse. Even from a short height this kind of fall can be very damaging.

Firm surface. Concrete and other firm surfaces are of no concern. Soft soil can be a real danger. Any new soil or mulch has not been compacted enough to support your ladder. It may be ok at four feet. 30 feet not so much.

ROOF

Gutters are sometimes set back and it's necessary to walk on the roof. Tile, wood, composite. They all become very slippery when moist. North, East facing roofs are usually the worst. Trees or buildings blocking the sun on the other sides can be also be hazardous.

Roofs will often develop algae often on north or east facing roofs. It can also happen on other areas depending on the tree shade and other light factors. One slip, you lose your balance and you could be falling off a roof.

WINDOW WELLS

Many new homes have basements with window wells. Be very careful to set up your ladder around these. Don't expect the builder has ensured that the soil be compacted to support your ladder. I have first hand experience with this and am lucky to be able to share this with you.

MOLES

Do you see mole mounds on you property. Those tunnels can destabilize the ground. You don't want to be at the top of a ladder to realize that danger.
